International Day of Families

Filed under: Uncategorized — lynette06 at 2:54 pm on Wednesday, May 20, 2009

The family is the basic unit of society and I think the importance of this is often overlooked. I think a national day recognizing it is something we should do a better job acknowledging, as it is something I wasn’t aware even existed. I will often hear at school, or just with my friends in general, complaining about there family, but my family is so important to me and has had such a profound influence on my life that I can’t imagine not being a part of the one I am. My cousins are my best friends and I’ve learned almost everything I know from my parents or siblings. My family is not perfect, we don’t always get a long and I admit that sometimes I complain my parents are too strict or obnoxious, but in the overall scheme of things I am so grateful for them.

I come from an unusually large family with 14 kids and hundreds of cousins so I am not unfamiliar with the idea of sharing and not having the attention focused on me, but I think the close relationships we share has helped each of us become a better person. Some of my favorite memories are with my siblings, nieces and nephews, and cousins. We’ll stay up talking for hours about philosophies of life, politics, our social life, the list goes on. The love they show for me is something I know I can always fall back on and will always be there for me even if sometimes I feel like my friends aren’t.

Spending one day in the year focused on family relationships would not only give me an excuse to be with my family but I think it is good for all people to take the opportunity to improve relationships with their family as I’ve seen the positive effect its had on my own life. I hope people will recognize the importance of this day and apply it in their lives.

Heroes

The number of people who could fit the definition of hero in my life is far too many for me to ever write about. The influence so many others have had on my life has shaped me into the person I am today, but one person who has had an expecially profound influence on my life is my sister.

From the time I was an adventurous toddler running off down Thurston Rd. through my middle school and high school years when I would get myself into trouble for a variety of other reasons, she was always there to pick me up. She was constantly trying to make sure I wouldn’t make the same mistakes she did and let me know when I was doing something I would regret. Sometimes it drove me crazy and I thought she was being overly cautious, but now I am so grateful for the times she told me not to follow the crowd and made sure I always kept god first in my life. The mistakes I might have made would lead my down a different path and led to places I never want to be.

Now she’s off to college and I look to her for an example in my life. She still checks in on me and gives me advice when I complain about the drama or stress of high school. I had the opportunity to spend one year with her in high school and I admired the way she was friendly to everyone and always put others first, something I sometimes struggle with. She recently came home to visit and picked up where she left off and told me I had the responsibility to watch over my younger brother and make sure life went as smoothly as possible for him. Overall she has inspired me to be a better person and want to pass on what she gave to me, to those around me.

#8 Shades of yellow

Filed under: Uncategorized — lynette06 at 8:42 pm on Monday, May 4, 2009

sunset watching the sunset is one of my favorite things to do, whether its sitting out on the roof with friends or family or hangin out on cocoa cliffs with my Cross Country team, it’s beautiful. Going on bike rides and walks is also one of my favorite pass times on a nice summer evening.

pineapple It doesn’t get much better than a nice, ripe, juicy pineapple. Its bright yellow color just makes it look even more irresistable.

daisy Fields of daisies can occupy long hours of my Summer. Laying out in fields of daisies making daisy chains was a fun pass time in elementary school, but now, years later I still find myself talking for hours with my best friend while we make each other our floral jewelry.

Cougars are one of my favorite animals and I would love to see one in the wild as long as I was in a safe position. It fascinates me how strong and dangerous they are and they happen to be the mascot of my favorite team so I’ve liked them ever since I started watching cougar football and basketball games with my dad. They do live in Oregon and I’ve talked to multiple people in my area who have seen wild cougars and I would love to experience that before I leave.

Earth Day

Today we get a chance to be a part of improving our earth with millions of others who care about the environment we live in.  It’s a chance to show how much we care about the environment around us. You can participate by turning off lights to save energy, ride a bike instead of drive a car, and recycle instead of littering or even throwing recyclable objects away. Make a difference!

I enjoyed the Podcast by Austin about “My Side of the Mountain.” There was an adventurous background music the theme of the book. At the beginning he describes the condition he is in for most of the book living in this tree. I could imagine exactly what the main character was going through. As some of the events in the story are described, it made me want to read the book because it sounded interesting. He read several passages from the story that made it more interesting. He used different voices when quoting characters which made it easier to tell when it was him speakind or the book. The story sounded very exciting and interesting in the podcast and I think it did a nice job drawing listeners to want to hear the book. http://www.sps.lane.edu/it/sps/hs/coltcast/per2/index.html

Blog Post #7 Slice of Life Writing

My stomach was turning as I made last minute build ups before my last. It was the last invite of my track season and most likely my last chance to get a big PR on my 3k. Moments after I returned to the line the gun shot off and I was gone. Once I was running, the nerves left me, focused on something my body knew well. I hit that 6th lap and the heat only made my body want to quit more, but I kept telling myself I could keep going. I finished my 7th lap and the adrenaline rush of only having 200 meters to go kicked in. My legs went numb  and all I wanted was to be across that finish line. I gave it every ounce of energy just as I crossed that line and I half fell unable to even walk in a straight line anymore. I looked up at my time and, though my body ached worse than any race I can remember, I felt an indescribable satisfaction in knowing that I had just pushed myself to the limit and honestly given it everything I had.
